By now, most of you should have received an update from ASEBP regarding benefit changes effective January 1, 2009. Here is a quick rundown of the changes that affect our particular plan:

EXTENDED HEALTH CARE

WIGS – In addition to coverage for hair loss due to radiation or chemotherapy, claims for hair loss due to serious medical conditions will now be processed, subject to a pre-approval process. The maximum coverage amounts have increased to $600 every three years.

ENDOVENOUS LASER THERAPY – There is new coverage for the treatment of varicose veins. The allowable coverage is $5,000 maximum for lifetime.

INSIDE CANADA COVERAGE – Non-emergency treatment coverage available inside the province of residence will be extended to all of Canada.  Emergency treatment coverage will continue to be available anywhere in Canada.

NOTES: Pre-approval is still required if you are referred to another province to receive specialized treatment. The limits and maximums currently in place for non-emergency treatment in Alberta will apply to any other province/territory.

DEFINITIONS –

Spouse – legally married to the covered member OR in an adult interdependent relationship

Child – ASEBP requires that children be registered on a parent’s Alberta health plan. Their provisions are as follows:

Single children under 21 who are wholly dependent on a parent, including adopted children, foster children (if an income tax deduction was claimed), and wards of the court.

Single children 21 years of age or older and wholly dependent on a parent because of physical or mental disabilities.

Single children under 25 years of age who are enrolled in three or more courses at an accredited educational institution.
